Shadows lengthen across Jeffco Stadium during the second annual Pink Showdown football game where fans, coaches, players and cheerleaders donned pink in support of breast cancer awareness. Wheat Ridge and Dakota Ridge high schools teamed up for the event.
The Dakota Ridge High Eagles and Wheat Ridge High Farmers joined forces in support of breast cancer research and treatment at the second annual Pink Showdown game at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood. The stands and field at Jeffco Stadium were awash in pink – down to the socks on the feet of players. Cheerleaders wore pink bows in their hair while members of the marching band donned pink shirts for the occasion. Hundreds of pink balloons were released in honor of those lost to the disease, as well as for those still fighting it.
The schools partnered with Lutheran Medical Center to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer. The NFL does much the same thing each year.
Proceeds from the event went to the Lutheran Medical Center Foundation, and are destined for breast cancer education, patient support and survivorship programs. The night before the game Shelley Smith, ESPN reporter, Wheat Ridge High School alum and breast cancer survivor, gave a presentation on her experience. She also spoke during halftime at the game.
