A Shelton Elementary student reacts as he gets slimed during Nickelodeon’s “Worldwide Day of Play” experience.
Students at Shelton Elementary got a very special, and slimy, visit from Nickelodeon, as part of the television network’s “Worldwide Day of Play” initiative. The event encourages kids to turn off the TV and be physically active, and celebrates the different ways to do so.
“We have a parent who has some connections with Nickelodeon. So, he called me and said, ‘hey I have an opportunity if you’re interested’,” explained Principal Karen Brown. “When I heard what they would do and what it’s about, I realized it fit our health and wellness goals to a ‘t’.”
Shelton’s playground was made into an extraordinary place to play, with fun games, including a bouncy Twister game, giant bowling, and more. Of course, there were slime machines that drenched students, and a few grownups, in Nickelodeon’s trademark green goo.
“The kids have been excited. You see them out dancing, jumping … it just makes me happy to see kids outside having fun. It’s just a great thing; they’re just having a blast,” said Brown.
Along with the games, kids danced to music played by Nickelodeon’s DJ Jason Everhart, who kept things moving with high-energy pop tunes. SpongeBob and his best friend, Patrick, also boogied down, along with Principal Brown.
“Kids nowadays have so many resources that keep them inside the house, and don’t let them get out and put their feet in the grass, run up a hill, run down a hill, get on a bicycle, get on the swings. So, that’s what we’re doing,” explained Everhart. “We’re all about the kids, so anything we can do to make their lives better, that’s what we’re all for.”
Students and staff enjoyed the day, getting outside and being active.
“Today is the best day ever,” proclaimed one happy Shelton student. “I love it!”
